Soldat is the only stallion in this bunch not in Kentucky (he’s in Florida). The son of War Front was a turf specialist at 2 who won the Fountain of Youth on the dirt before tailing off a bit. There are obviously reasons that he’s got a half-dozen in this sale and attention should be paid.

One of the leading sons of sire sensation, War Front, Soldat broke his maiden in a graded stakes on turf at two, and defeated a field that included Shackleford and To Honor and Serve to take the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) on dirt at three.

Soldat - out of a mare by a son of Forty Niner – is an example of the very successful cross of War Front over mares by Mr. Prospector line. This also includes the brilliantly speedy multiple grade one winner The Factor out of a mare by Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair, grandsire of Formal Gold); the 2014 grade one winner Peace and War from a daughter of Smart Strike (sire of English Channel, Curlin and Lookin at Lucky); a 2014 stakes winner out of a mare by Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid); a stakes winner out of a mare by Two Punch (also sire of Smoke Glacken). War Front himself is out of a mare by Fappiano son, Rubiano, but he has sired millionaire Warning Flag out of a mare by Fappiano grandson Unbridled’s Song (by Unbridled). Unbridled’s Song might be introduced through Songandaprayer, Dunkirk, Rockport Harbor, Old Fashioned, Value Plus, Even the Score, Half Ours, Zensational and Werblin). Unbridled is also sire of Grindstone (sire of Birdstone), Broken Vow, Empire Maker, Red Bullet, Untuttable and Spanish Steps. Other sources of Mr. Prospector that appeal here would include Seeking the Gold (sire of Cape Town, Mutakkdim and Petionville) and Woodman (both bred on the same cross as Miswaki, the broodmare sire of a War Front grade one winner); Gone West through such as Grand Slam, Speightstown, Elusive Quality, Proud Citizen, Double Honor, Dance Master and Zamindar; and Gulch and his son Thunder Gulch.

Mr. Prospector is a member of the Raise a Native line, and War Front has a stakes winner out of a mare by Peteski, a son of Affirmed from the Exclusive Native branch. It should also pay to introduce Raise a Native through Alydar and Wavering Monarch/Maria’s Mon.

War Front already has five stakes winners, including millionaire Departing, out of mares by Pulpit (sire of Tapit, Sky Mesa and Stroll) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Old Trieste, suggesting other sources of A.P. Indy, such as Bernardini, Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Congrats, Flatter, Stephen Got Even, Friends Lake, Jump Start, Majestic Warrior, Golden Missile and Full Mandate.

Although he is by a son of Northern Dancer, War Front has enjoyed success when crossed over mares from other branches of Northern Dancer. Danzig line stallions have excelled with mares descending from Sadler’s Wells, including a stakes winner by War Front out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells, and a graded stakes winner by War Front from a mare by El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller). War Front is sire of stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer son, Nijinsky II, via Strawberry Road, Alydeed (by Shadeed) and Caerleon, also suggesting daughters of Royal Academy. From the Storm Cat line, War Front has a stakes winner out of a mare by Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg, Henny Hughes and Cactus Ridge; grandsire of Scat Daddy), and there also Danzig line stakes winners out of mares by Storm Cat sons Bernstein, Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat), Future Storm, Giant’s Causeway (sire of First Samurai, and a brother to Freud), Mountain Cat, Tabasco Cat, Tactical Cat, Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart) and Van Nistelrooy. It would also be worth trying Stormy Atlantic and Storm Boot, who are from the immediate family of Apalachee, the sire of the second dam of Soldat.

Apalachee is also from the family of the previously mentioned Sadler’s Wells, as well as another Northern Dancer line horse who could be positive here, Nureyev, whose sons Atticus, Fasliyev, Spinning World, Stravinksy and Theatrical are all broodmare sires of Danzig line stakes winners. The cross of Danzig line stallions over Deputy Minister line mares has enjoyed success through Silver Deputy (and his son Posse), Dehere, French Deputy and Touch Gold. Northern Dancer is three-quarters related to Icecapade, and from that line War Front is sire of a grade one winner out of a mare by Mazel Trick (by Phone Trick) and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire, Clever Trick.

From Roberto line mares come War Front grade one winner War Command out of a daughter of Red Ransom, a graded scorer from a mare by Arch (by Kris S., also sire of Prized, Rock Hard Ten, You and I, Kissin Kris and Brocco), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Repriced, also suggesting Dynaformer, Lear Fan (who particularly appeals here) and Silver Hawk. War Front’s multiple grade one winner Declaration of War is out of a mare by Rahy, from the Blushing Groom line, and from the same sire line War Front also has a grade two winner from a daughter of Housebuster (by Mt. Livermore, also sire of Orientate and Peaks and Valleys). This would also suggest considering Blushing Groom through Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run and Wekiva Springs; grandson of Kafwain and Yonaguska). From the In Reality line, War Front has grade one scorer Data Link from a daughter of Known Fact, and he also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Glitterman, a horse who is out of an In Reality mare. There is also a stakes winner by War Front out of a mare by Yes It’s True (sire of Proud Accolade), a son of Is It True, from the Raja Baba line that is also represented by Well Decorated, Notebook and Formal Dinner.
