Crown of Thorns is a remarkably talented and versatile performer. A multiple grade two winner stakes winner, Crown Thorns was grade one placed at six, seven and nine furlongs, including when beaten just a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I). By millionaire Repent, Crown of Thorns is out of a half-sister to Champion Sprinter and successful sire, Smoke Glacken.

Crown of Thorns is inbred to Northern Dancer through Sovereign Dancer and Magesterial, both Northern Dancer/Bold Ruler crosses. It could be worth reinforcing this cross through Storm Cat, and we can note that Repent is sire of graded stakes winner Peyback Manning out of a mare by Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat). Stallions bred on the Storm Cat/Mr. Prospector cross such as Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart), Storm Creek, Storm Boot and Sea of Secrets should work well here, and other potential Storm Cat sources include Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg and Henny Hughes; grandsire of Scat Daddy), Tabasco Cat, Tactical Cat, Forestry, Giant's Causeway, Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Harlan's Holiday, Bernstein, Mountain Cat, Tabasco Cat and Freud. Bred on the same cross as Storm Cat is Summer Squall. Storm Cat is a grandson of Northern Dancer, and out of a mare by Northern Dancer’s three-quarters relative, Icecapade, Repent sired graded stakes winner Atoned. Icecapade is represented through two branches, those of Clever Trick and Wild Again. Sources of Clever Trick include Hadif, Tricky Creek and Phone Trick (sire of Caller I.D., Favorite Trick and Mazel Trick). Wild Again has a number of stallion sons, including Offlee Wild, Vicar, Wild Rush, Milwaukee Brew and Wild Event.

Repent’s graded stakes winner, Sweet Repent, is out of a mare by Formal Dinner, a son of the Raja Baba horse, Well Decorated. He also has two stakes winners out of a mare by another Well Decorated horse, Notebook (himself sire of Delaware Township). The Raja Baba strain can also be found through Is It True and Yes It’s True. Raja Baba is a son of Bold Ruler, and from another branch of that line, Repent sired graded stakes winner Diva Delite from a daughter of Tour d’Or. In addition, Repent’s stakes winner Big Wednesday, is out of a mare by a son of Bold Reasoning, sire of Seattle Slew, which suggests introducing that strain through such as A.P. Indy and sons and grandsons, Capote (sire of Boston Harbor and Matty G), Doneraile Court, Slew City Slew, Avenue of Flags, Vindication, Williamstown, General Meeting and Avenue of Flags. From the Bold Ruckus branch of Bold Reasoning’s sire, Boldnesian, Repent sired a stakes winner out of a mare by Beau Genius.

Repent enjoyed substantial success with mares from the Mr. Prospector line. Crown of Thorns is the most notable example, but he should enjoy crossing back over mares from this line. Repent also sired stakes winners out mares by the Mr. Prospector line stallions Quiet American, Black Tie Affair (by Miswaki), Distorted Humor and Jade Hunter. The success of Quiet American (sire of Real Quiet and grandsire of Midnight Lute), suggests trying other mares from the sire line of Fappiano, including Pentelicus and his three-quarters brother Unbridled, who is sire of Grindstone (sire of Birdstone) and Broken Vow – who both give an interesting pedigree pattern – Empire Maker, Red Bullet, Untuttable and Spanish Steps, and of Unbridled’s Song (who is available through Songandaprayer, Buddha, Dunkirk, Eurosilver, First Defence, Half Ours, Even the Score, Old Fashioned, Rockport Harbor, Werblin and Zensational). Distorted Humor is by Forty Niner, sire of End Sweep, Tactical Advantage, Banker’s Gold , Coronado’s Quest, Gold Fever, Gold Case, Jules, Roar, Twining and West Acre, and grandsire of Trippi and Peace Rules). We can also note a stakes winner by Repent’s sire, Louis Quatorze, out of a mare by Mutakddim (by Seeking the Gold, also sire of Petionville and Cape Town). It might also be interesting to try mares by Smoke Glacken to give inbreeding to the family of Crown of Thorns. From the same Raise a Native line as Mr. Prospector, Repent has a stakes winner out of a mare by Wavering Monarch, sire of Maria’s Mon.

Repent is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by Relaunch (who can be found through Honour and Glory, Put It Back, Bertrando, Officer, Tiznow, Skywalker, Slew Gin Fizz, and Waquoit), There is also a stakes winner from this male line out of a Valid Appeal mare, encouraging daughters of Successful Appeal, Valid Expectations, Valid Wager and Mister Jolie. There are also stakes winners by Repent out of mares by Prime Timber and Out of Place (both from the Cox’s Ridge line) and Meadowlake. We’ll also note six stakes winners by Crown of Thorn’s grandsire, Louis Quatorze, out of mares by Southern Halo, the sire of More Than Ready, and a son of Halo, also sire of Halo’s Image and Jolie’s Halo.
