Zaftig was born at raised at Woodford Thoroughbreds. Zaftig continued her progress this year and showed herself to be one of the very best 3 year olds in the country. She entered the Breeders Cup off a 130 day layoff and ran a very creditable 3rd in her first attempt on an artificial surface. Earlier in the summer Zaftig proved just how good she is in a major way. The 3-year-old daughter of Gone West beat last year's champion 2-year-old filly Indian Blessing in the June 7 Acorn Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park.
Zaftig pressed the early pace set by Indian Blessing and won the mile race by 41/2 lengths in 1:34.50. It was way back to the next two finishers. Game Face finished 171/4 lengths behind the runner-up, and it was another 133/4 lengths to last-place finisher Golden Doc A.
The Acorn was the second consecutive stakes triumph for Zaftig, who was produced from the Canadian grade I-winning Cozzene mare Zoftig. Zaftig captured the May 3 Nassau County Stakes (gr. III) by 51/4 lengths at Belmont Park.
Zoftig is also the dam of another high class filly in Zofzig by Danzig. She had a brief but brilliant career. She retired undefeated with wins at Keeneland on polytrack and 2 weeks later won her turf allowance in style at Churchill Downs. Zoftig is currently in foal to first crop sire Hard Spun.
