Emerging stars from Woodford mares. Icon Project and Song of Solomon
RSS Feeds Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Big wins for two daughters of Woodford mares. Woodford is delighted to offer full siblings to these emerging stars at the 2009 yearling sales. The Empire Maker colt out of La Gueriere will go to Saratoga and the Unbridled's Song filly out of Regal Miss Copelan will go to Keeneland.

SONG OF SOLOMON (f, 3, Unbridled's Song--Regal Miss Copelan {SW}, by Copelan) left herself plenty to do here, walking out of the gate and covering a ton of ground, but the good ones overcome adversity. The full sister to Rockport Harbor, MGSW, $324,800, debuted innocently enough with a third-place effort going six furlongs at Delaware Park Nov. 2, but broke through in a big way next time out, graduating by 13 1/2 lengths going two turns at Philly Park Nov. 22 and becoming a “TDN Rising Star” in the process. Those two starts were for Jeff Barkley, but she was in the capable hands of Larry Jones for her three-year-old bow. Flatfooted when the gates flew back, Song of Solomon spotted the field about four lengths, then was unable to get in on the track and travelled four wide around the first turn. Three abreast as they raced down the backstretch, the $525,000 KEESEP yearling gained on the turn, but was fanned six deep into the stretch. Nevertheless, she plugged on gamely and found the line a head better than Esperanza d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro), who travelled in the three path throughout and was an unlucky runner-up. Lifetime Record: 3-2-0-1, $64,827.

Off the board in her European finale at Longchamp in September, the dark bay was sent to the sidelines until resurfacing with a closing fifth against allowance foes at Gulfstream in February. Sent off the 3-2 choice, Icon Project lingered near the back early, rallied along the rail to take control at the top of the stretch and drew clear to score by 4 3/4 lengths over Awesome Moment (Awesome Again). The $775,000 KEESEP yearling is a half to Lasting Approval (With Approval), MGSW & GISP, $510,266; Taiki Zillion (Twining), SP-Jpn, $1,154,742; and Warrior Song (Unbridled's Song), SP, $167,413. Lifetime Record: 7-2-1-1, $56,128.
